Child dies of flu in Kern County

BAKERSFIELD, Calif. (KBAK/KBFX) — A 9-year-old girl has died of flu.

Kern County health officials announced the death Friday. The girl, a student in the Fruitvale School District, died Thursday.

Dr. Claudia Jonah of the Kern County Public Health Department, said, "The flu is not something to take lightly," in encouraging people to get flu shots.

The county health department will hold a vaccine clinic 10 a.m. to noon Saturday at 1800 Mt. Vernon Ave. Cost for a flu shot will be $9, health officials said.

Flu shots are also available at the majority of local pharmacies and doctor offices.

The flu shot takes two weeks typically to protect against the virus, health officials said.
