SHAFTER, Calif. (KBAK/KBFX) - Seven cats were rescued Tuesday night in an apartment fire.

Kern County firefighters encountered four units threatened by fire on the 600 block of Kern Street. They forced the door open to the involved apartment and got the fire under control within 10 minutes.

The cause of the fire is under investigation. No structures were destroyed, but the fire department estimated damage at around $30,000.

No people were hurt.

During a post-fire search, crews found 11 cats. Seven of the cats were rescued and tended to on scene using animal oxygen masks, according to the department.
