Car of missing Wasco man found in San Bernardino County

BAKERSFIELD, Calif. (KBAK/KBFX) — The car belonging to a missing elderly Wasco man has been found in San Bernardino County.

Clarence Reynolds, 80, was reported missing last week after he left his home to visit his wife at a Bakersfield hospital and never arrived, according to the Kern County Sheriff's Office.

Reynolds' Ford Focus was found abandoned Monday afternoon, stuck in a sandy wash about 10 miles north of Highway 58 in Black Mountain Canyon, according to San Bernardino County Sheriff's Department spokeswoman Cindy Bachman. The car was spotted by a San Bernardino deputy out of Barstow, Bachman said.

Deputies searched the area until nightfall without any luck. The search resumed Tuesday morning, Bachman said.

Reynolds' family has told Eyewitness News that he's suffered episodes of disorientation and forgetfulness.

Call the Kern County Sheriff's Office at (661) 861-3110 or the San Bernardino County Sheriff's Department at (909) 387-2978 if you have any information that can help locate Reynolds.

Neither authorities nor family members have told Eyewitness News that Reynolds suffers from Alzheimer's disease, but the Alzheimer's Disease Association of Kern County says disorientation is a common issue for their patients. The association said Tuesday that 60 percent of people with Alzheimer’s will wander. But, preparation - identification bracelets, for example - can help. Call the association at (661) 393-8871 for more information on resources for those living with Alzheimer’s.
