Car found in canal prompts search-and-rescue callout
A search-and-rescue team from the Kern County Sheriff's Office is called Monday, Sept. 17, 2012, to a canal in southeast Bakersfield after a car was discovered submerged in the water.

BAKERSFIELD, Calif. (KBAK/KBFX) — A search-and-rescue diver from the Kern County Sheriff's Office examined a canal in southeast Bakersfield after a car was discovered submerged in the water.

California Highway Patrol officers were dispatched to the canal at East Panama Lane and Cottonwood Road just before 9 a.m. Monday.

A spokesman said the car did not appear to have been involved in an accident, but a search-and-rescue team was called out just to make sure there were no victims in the water.

The car had been reported stolen back in January, so investigators said it was likely dumped in the canal in an attempt to cover up the crime.

Once it was determined there were no victims, the car was pulled from the canal. The case is being investigated by the CHP.
