BAKERSFIELD, Calif. (KBAK/KBFX) — Highway 178 reopened Friday morning through the Kern River Canyon.

A pair of mudslides - one near the mouth of the canyon and one near Bodfish - caused by rainstorms Monday night left the main route from Bakersfield to the Kern River Valley shut down. Crews had to clear the mud and rocks and rebuild the roadway and guardrails in some spots.

Only one lane will reopen Friday, Caltans spokesman Jose Camarena said. Crews will direct traffic from both directions.

Camarena said he's unsure when both lanes will be open, though he estimated some day next week.
