BAKERSFIELD, Calif. (KBAK/KBFX) — An estimated 4,000 local children lined up at Valley Baptist Church to receive toys from the CHiPs for Kids toy drive, an annual event put on by the California Highway Patrol.

Families were given plastic ‘chips,' distributed through nonprofits that work with CHiPs for Kids.

Once doors opened, children traded chips for their pick of more than 4,000 toys.

"With all of our volunteers here, we're able to take these kids shopping," said CHP Officer Robert Rodriguez.

The children were allowed inside while their parents waited.

It's a Christmas experience that at least one mother’s children wouldn't otherwise have.

“I'm just very appreciative that the community is so nice and helpful, and that they're giving,” said Serena Cerna, a mother of two.
