BAKERSFIELD, Calif. (KBAK/KBFX) — A pedestrian was killed by a car Wednesday morning on the far south edge of Bakersfield.

The California Highway Patrol said the man was walking around 5 a.m. in the westbound lane of Di Giorgio Road towards Cottonwood Road. An approaching driver, heading in the same direction, spotted the man and tried to swerve to avoid him, but the pedestrian suddenly moved farther into the westbound lane, the CHP said.

The Kern County coroner's office identified the pedestrian as 56-year-old Juan J. Martinez, of Bakersfield. The CHP earlier said the pedestrian was from Imperial Beach, in San Diego County.

The driver was not injured.

The CHP said neither drugs nor alcohol were a factor in the crash.

Di Giorgio Road was closed for more than two hours following the crash.
