Boys & Girls Clubs of Kern County to hold open houses Thursday

BAKERSFIELD, Calif. (KBAK/KBFX) - The Boys & Girls Clubs of Kern County will hold open houses and club tours Thursday as part of the national Lights On Afterschool event.

Lights On Afterschool calls attention to the importance of after-school programs and the resources required to run them.

The open houses will be 4-6 p.m. at three Kern County Boys & Girls Clubs: Armstrong Youth Center, 801 Niles St., Bakersfield; Stockdale Club, 5207 Young St., Bakersfield; and Lamont Club, 8301 Segrue Road, Lamont.

"Lights On Afterschool celebrates the skills students learn at our after-school programs," Zane Smith, executive director of the local Boys & Girls Clubs, said in a news release. "It is a powerful reminder that after-school programs keep children safe, inspire them to learn, and relieve working parents of worries about how their children spend their afternoons. Unfortunately, too many kids are unsupervised and exposed to crime or other risks each afternoon."
