Update: The coroner's office said Thursday that 6-year-old Zelma Chaney, of Wasco, died at Children's Hospital Central California.
Wednesday night's original story is below.
BAKERSFIELD, Calif. (KBAK/KBFX) — A crash Wednesday just before 10 p.m. shut down southbound traffic on Highway 99 at Merle Haggard Drive.
California Highway Patrol officers at the scene said a passenger vehicle stalled in the No. 2 lane and was rear-ended by a box truck. The CHP later said it was unsure why the car stopped.
The truck driver, 50-year-old Luis Martinez, of Los Angeles, apparently didn't see the stopped car and plowed into it at 60 mph.
Four people in the car were taken to local hospitals with injuries ranging from moderate to major. The CHP later said three of the victims were children, ages 3, 6 and 16. The car's driver was identified as 28-year-old Lacora Johnson, of Bakersfield.
Officers reopened southbound traffic around 10:40 p.m., but traffic was backed up for several miles.
