Bed-ridden woman killed in Orange County fire

LAGUNA NIGUEL, Calif. (AP) — Authorities say a bed-ridden woman was killed when fire tore through an Orange County condominium, despite efforts by neighbors who tried to save her.

Fire Authority Capt. Steve Concialdi says one man used an ax to break open her front door while another tried to get in through the back of the residence. Both were forced out of the home by heavy smoke.

The Orange County Register reports about 40 firefighters brought the blaze in Laguna Niguel under control within 20 minutes on Wednesday.

Concialdi says investigators believe the fire was likely caused by the woman discarding a cigarette while smoking in bed.

The woman, said to be in her 60s, had physical impairments. Concialdi says firefighters had responded to residence more than 50 times in the past two years to assist her.
