Bakersfield police uncover 6,700 pounds of pot in U-Haul

BAKERSFIELD, Calif. (KBAK/KBFX) - Police arrested two men Wednesday after discovering more than 6,700 pounds of marijuana in a U-Haul van.

Police said the driver of the U-Haul ran a red light around 5:30 a.m. at Bernard Street and Wendell Avenue, near Highway 178 in northeast Bakersfield.

While talking with the driver and his passenger, the officers smelled marijuana and called for a trained drug-sniffing dog. The dog alerted officers to the cargo area of the van, so officers cut the lock and found stacks of pot, according to police.

Officers estimated the street value of the drugs in the millions.

The driver, 22-year-old Daniel Ruiz, and passenger 24-year-old Jose Alcarez, were arrested on suspicion of possession of marijuana for sales, transportation of marijuana and conspiracy.
