BAKERSFIELD, Calif. (KBAK/KBFX) — Officers shot and killed a "suicidal" woman Tuesday morning in east Bakersfield, according to police spokeswoman Michaela Sims.

Police were called around 7:45 a.m. to the 5000 block of Magic Avenue, near Oswell Street and Virginia Avenue, on a report of a woman walking in the street with a handgun, Sims said.

The Kern County coroner's office later in the day identified the woman in the street as 31-year-old Maria Rita Zarate.

A mental health professional also responded to the area Tuesday morning and interacted with Zarate for about 30 minutes prior to the shooting.

Officers fired on Zarate when she raised a gun towards them, Sims said.
