BAKERSFIELD, Calif. (KBAK/KBFX) — Police officers were fired upon Monday night while driving in the south-central area of Bakersfield.

Two marked patrol cars were heading south on Real Road just south of Stockdale Highway when 32-year-old Daniel Garcia shot at them from outside a 7-Eleven store on the 3600 block of Stockdale, according to police.

Garcia and 21-year-old Liodam Gonzalez had just robbed the convenience store for beer when the officers pulled up behind them on an unrelated call, police said. Garcia had pointed the gun at the 7-Eleven clerk's head during the robbery, police said.

After Garcia allegedly opened fire, Officer Andrew Ferguson returned fire. No one was hit in the exchange.

Both Garcia and Gonzalez were caught and arrested.

Police said Garcia could be charged with attempted murder of a police officer, robbery, participation in a criminal street gang, felon in possession of a firearm, felon in possession of a loaded firearm, possession of a weapon with the intent to commit a felony, and a parole violation.
