Bakersfield man sentenced for buying explosives

FRESNO, Calif. (KBAK/KBFX) - A Bakersfield has been sentenced to six months in prison for buying explosives from an undercover FBI agent.

According to court documents, 24-year-old John Mendoza was trying to buy rocket-propelled grenades, mines and anti-aircraft missiles in early December. He arranged a meeting with the undercover officer on Dec. 13 in Mojave and bought two grenades for $300 each. He was arrested after placing the grenades in his car.

Under the six month sentence handed down Monday in Federal Court in Fresno,  Mendoza was ordered to forfeit several firearms and a large amount of ammunition.
