BAKERSFIELD, Calif. (KBAK/KBFX) — Eyewitness News has received numerous calls from frustrated commuters who can't find a way off Highway 99 in south Bakersfield.

Caltrans has announced some ramp closures beginning for the Hwy. 99 widening project. The $33 million project will convert the highway from six lanes to eight lanes from State Route 119 (south point of project) to the Wilson Road overcrossing (north point of project, near Valley Plaza Mall).

The project will add a 12-foot lane and 10-foot inside shoulder in each direction. Roadwork should be complete by fall 2014, according to Caltrans.

Still, ramp closures at Taft Highway, Panama Lane and White Lane have many drivers taking long detours.
