BAKERSFIELD, Calif. (KBAK/KBFX) — The death of a 1-year-old boy Wednesday is being investigated by Kern County Sheriff's homicide detectives as suspicious.

According to sheriff's spokesman Ray Pruitt, the toddler was brought into Kern Medical Center by his parents. The boy was pronounced dead shortly after 1:30 p.m. at the hospital.

The sheriff's office was called because the boy, later identified as 16-month-old Neven Thompson, had head injuries and serious trauma to his body.

Homicide detectives went to the family's home in the 1100 block of Webster Street and were waiting for a search warrant to be signed before going inside to investigate.

An investigator outside the home said the parents remained at KMC, where they were being interviewed by detectives.

The boy's grandfather stopped by the family's home and told Eyewitness News that the boy has a lot of medical problems and had been in and out of the hospital. He said he's confident the investigation will show there was no foul play.
