KERNVILLE, Calif. -- The Bull Fire, which destroyed eight homes and a few outbuildings as it spread across more than 16,000 acres of the Sequoia National Forest near Riverkern and Kernville, was 55 percent contained Friday, authorities said.

There was no timetable for full containment for the fire that had been burning since Monday.

Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger declared a state of emergency earlier in the week for Kern County because of the Bull Fire and the destructive West Fire near Tehachapi.
