2 arrested in gang shooting that killed bystander

McFARLAND, Calif. -- Two people have been arrested in an apparent gang-related shooting that took the life of an innocent bystander.

Santos Balleza, 35, of McFarland, was caught in the middle of the gunfire May 13 at A&M Market, 398 Sherwood Ave. He suffered gunshots to his head and shoulder and died days later at Kern Medical Center.

The target of the shooting, 33-year-old Michael Ramirez, of Wasco, was hit three times in the upper torso but survived.

The investigation led to the arrests of 27-year-old Michael John Torres and 21-year-old Jose Noe Rodriguez, according to McFarland police. Torres was arrested locally on May 20, and Rodriguez was apprehended over the weekend in Washington state.

McFarland police said Monday that Rodriguez should be extradited early this week.
