FRESNO, Calif. (AP) — Former Gottschalks chairman Joe Levy says he is in talks to open a new series of department stores, starting in cities where the Fresno-based chain closed down last year.

Gottschalks officials announced Tuesday that the first store would likely open in Clovis on Nov. 1. The store's probable location has been empty since July, when Gottschalks ended the liquidation of 58 stores that dotted towns across the West.

Levy said developers from Oakhurst and Auburn also have approached him to return to those cities with his new company, Gottschalks by Joe Levy Inc.

The company's bankruptcy left a retail and advertising void in many communities. Bakersfield lost two Gottschalks: an anchor store in East Hills Mall and one in Valley Plaza Mall.

It's unknown if new Gottschalks will open in Bakersfield.
