9-year-old collapses, dead at OC youth club

COSTA MESA, Calif. (AP) — A 9-year-old boy died Thursday after he collapsed playing basketball at an Orange County youth club, authorities said.

Costa Mesa Fire Department Battalion Chief Fred Seguin says Myles Thames suddenly fell to the ground Thursday at the Boys & Girls Club of the Harbor Area. He was rushed to a hospital where he was pronounced dead.

A report from the Los Angeles Times said an autopsy performed Friday determined that Myles suffered a cardiac arrest as a result of hypertrophic cardiomyopathy, a thickening of the heart that makes it more difficult to pump blood.

A cousin, Titus Hasson, tells the Times that when Myles was younger he had occasional health problems but hadn't suffered any in the last two years.

Myles was a student at Kaiser Elementary School in Costa Mesa.
