BAKERSFIELD, Calif. -- Taft Highway has reopened after a fatal crash forced its closure for about three hours Thursday morning.

The California Highway Patrol reopened the road shortly before noon. A pickup crashed into a semi-truck carrying carrots for Grimmway Farms at the exit from southbound Interstate 5 onto Highway 119, also known as Taft Hwy.

The driver of the pickup, which caught fire after it collided with a trailer, died at the scene. His name was withheld.

The big rig's driver, 43-year-old Jose Mascareno, was unhurt, the CHP said.

It's unknown what caused the crash, although the CHP made note of thick fog in the area.

The CHP also reported an different multi-vehicle crash Thursday morning on Hwy. 119 between I-5 and Highway 43, although details weren't disclosed.
