Evacuations mulled as new SoCal storm approaches

LA CANADA FLINTRIDGE, Calif. (AP) — Los Angeles County officials are considering evacuating foothills neighborhoods slammed by mudslides as another storm approaches.
Sheriff's Department spokeswoman Nicole Nishida says authorities are meeting to consider the weather and it's likely they'll order evacuations for some areas before the storm hits Tuesday. The National Weather Service says another inch of rain could dump on Los Angeles-area foothills already considered at high risk of flooding because they're near mountain slopes denuded by last year's wildfire. Forty-three homes in La Canada Flintridge were damaged when a debris basin clogged during a weekend storm and overflowed. A fleet of about 300 county dump trucks are clearing the basins and the local roads of mud but a spokesman says there's not enough time to complete the work before the storm arrives. |
