VALLEJO, Calif. (AP) — Authorities are searching for a 15-year-old boy suspected of shooting a Vallejo ice cream truck driver near a middle school.

Det. John Whitney told CBS-5 that Peter Montenegro of Hayward and another boy who has not yet been identified demanded money from 39-year-old Amarjit Kaur Wednesday afternoon. The truck was near Springstowne Middle School, where Kaur apparently regularly sold ice cream.

Whitney says Kaur, a recent immigrant who does not speak English well, had trouble understanding and was shot when the boys thought she was not responding quickly enough.

Kaur is hospitalized in serious but stable condition.

The Associated Press does not typically name juveniles accused of a crime, but police identified the boy because he is considered armed and dangerous.
