BAKERSFIELD, Calif. (KBAK/KBFX) -- The water was 56-degrees at the McMurtrey Aquatic Center for New Year's thrill seekers taking part in the annual Polar Bear Plunge.

Swimmers paid $5 each to ride the slide into the water and swim 25 yards for a cup of hot chocolate.

Fred Macias said he took the plunge as part of an effort to do things differently in 2014.

The event was sponsored by the city and co-sponsored by Arctic Glacier Premium Ice.
