BAKERSFIELD, Calif. -- A mostly friendly crowd united against the president's health care reform bill Wednesday night during a town hall meeting hosted by Congressman Kevin McCarthy.

Some attendees, however, said they left feeling disappointed that their questions weren't answered.

An estimated 3,000 people turned out for the much-anticipated event at California State University, Bakersfield's Icardo Center.

McCarthy, a Republican, solicited questions and opinions about President Barack Obama's proposed health care overhaul.

McCarthy made it clear he didn't support the controversial plan, and many of the attendees seemed to be on the same page.

"Why are we willing to spend more and tax more when unemployment is creeping past 10 percent?" asked attendee Charles Sanderford.

Others claimed Congress members had failed to read the entire bill. And others wanted to know if Republicans would oppose the bill or similar bills all the way without compromise.

Some folks did express opposing views, wanting to know how McCarthy and fellow Republicans plan to provide insurance for people who can't afford it because of a job loss.

"You people who are healthy think we have the greatest health care system in the world," said one disabled man, who said he was fired when his employer found out he had multiple sclerosis. "We need our government to stand up for us, and I don't think you are, Mr. McCarthy."

There was a heavy police presence inside and outside the Icardo Center. People were civil and there were no disturbances like the ones that have disrupted some town hall events in other cities.

"I think he did very well," said Barbara Foss, who attended the meeting. Foss said she agreed with most of the people who attended and voiced opposition to the health care reform plan.

McCarthy has posted information about the bill along with his opinion about the bill on his Web site, www.kevinmccarthy.house.gov.
