ESCONDIDO, Calif. (AP) — A U.S. Border Patrol worker has been arrested in Escondido following a hatchet attack that left a couple seriously injured.

Escondido police Lt. Neal Griffin says 33-year-old Gamalier Rivera was arrested Thursday after officers found him near a pay phone with blood on his clothes.

The couple was attacked when an assailant broke into their home. Police say Rivera struck the boyfriend several times in the neck and torso with a hatchet and wounded the 21-year-old woman in the leg. The boyfriend is in critical condition.

The motive for the attack was not known and police could not immediately say what Rivera was booked for.

Border Patrol spokesman Richard Smith confirmed Rivera works for the agency, but would not specify his role.
