BAKERSFIELD, Calif. -- Traffic was shut down on Kern Canyon Road near Highway 178 Thursday because of a natural gas leak.

The 8-inch gas main on Kern Canyon Road, also known as Highway 184, near the Payless Mini Storage was busted by a third-party dig-in, according to a spokeswoman with Pacific Gas and Electric.

City firefighters evacuated the business just before 3:30 p.m. and blocked traffic from Highway 178. Those trying to get to Highway 178 from Kern Canyon Road were turned around at the Chevron station.

PG&E crews quickly rerouted gas to customers through another pipeline so service was not interrupted.

The leak was finally contained just before 9 p.m. and the highway was reopened.
