BAKERSFIELD, Calif. -- A proposed clean energy power plant got a $308 million boost from the federal government Wednesday.

The 250-megawatt plant would be built by Hydrogen Energy International and would provide energy to more than 150,000 homes, according to a news release from Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger's office.

The money comes from the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act via the U.S. Department of Energy.

The project could generate 1,500 construction jobs and 100 permanent "green collar" jobs, according to the governor's office.

It would also cut about 2 million tons of greenhouse gas emissions every year by turning petroleum coke, biomass, coal or blends of each into hydrogen and carbon dioxide.
