BAKERSFIELD, Calif. -- Closure of Kern County's minimum security jail leading to the early release of 560 inmates and laying off between 45 and 93 detention deputies remains a possibility, said Kern County Sheriff Donny Youngblood.

Youngblood made a personal appeal before the county board of supervisors for an additional $4 million to the sheriff's department budget to avoid the inmate releases and personnel layoffs.

But Supervisors did not say yes, and they did not say no to the sheriff's request. Instead, Supervisors directed county staff to look at where $4 million could be found even if that means taking money from other departments.

The board asked staff to determine the impact this would have on other departments. Supervisors delayed making a decision until at least next week.

Even if the sheriff's department does get its $4 million, Youngblood said he will need to lay off 45 detention deputies and 15 civilians employees.
