BAKERSFIELD, Calif. -- Friends and family shared their memories Tuesday of Alton Saceaux, the cyclist who was killed Monday night while riding along South Union Avenue.

Saceaux, 55, is survived by his wife Alice, three children and four grandchildren. Family and friends said he was an avid cyclist who had recently rode to Canada.

"He died doing what he loved doing," Kevin Cornelius said of his friend.

One of the victim's sons, Cory Saceaux, said he rushed to be with his father after the crash.

"He was not coherent (and) he wasn't responding at all," Cory Saceaux said. "I tried to talk to him, tell him I loved him and everything would be OK, but he wasn't responding."

The suspect, 67-year-old Douglas Kaiser, was allegedly driving drunk when he hit Saceaux with his Ford F-350 pickup.

Kaiser was arrested on suspicion of gross vehicular manslaughter while intoxicated, driving under the influence causing death and hit-and-run causing death, but he was released from jail Tuesday after posting $130,000 bail.
