MONTARA, Calif. (AP) — Authorities have released the names of a mother and daughter who died after being swept out to sea off a beach in San Mateo County.

Officials say 41-year-old Romila Higgins and 5-year-old Indali Higgins of Walnut Creek drowned after being swept away in a riptide off Montara State Beach.

A Cal Fire official says the mother and daughter were pulled from the waters off Montara State Beach after rescue crews responded to the beach around 4:21 p.m. Monday.

The two were taken to Stanford Hospital in a separate rescue helicopters, but both were pronounced dead at the hospital.

Cal Fire Division Chief Richard Sampson says the incident took place during a family outing at the beach.

Montara State Beach is about 20 miles south of San Francisco.
