A 19-year-old man died after he fell asleep and crashed into a eucalyptus tree early Tuesday.

The crash occurred just after midnight when Landon Roger Brownell "became fatigued and dozed off" on Highway 99 north of 7th Standard Road, according to the California Highway Patrol.

Brownell was wearing his seat belt but died in the emergency room of Kern Medical Center, according to the Kern County Coroner's office.

It's unknown how fast Brownell was traveling.
