A man who died in police custody Sunday had twice pulled Taser darts out of his skin while fighting with officers.

Bakersfield police responded about 4 p.m. to the 4000 block of Maize Court after an unidentified woman called and said her brother was acting strangely. The woman, who told police she was concerned that her brother would hurt someone, let police into her brother's home, where he had barricaded himself into a closet.

The man, 31-year-old Rodolfo Lepe, refused to come out of a bedroom closet and fought with officers as they tried to take him into custody. Officers twice used a Taser, but Lepe pulled the darts out of his skin and continued to fight, according to a police news release.

Lepe reportedly hit and bit an officer and grabbed another officer's holstered gun before police were able to subdue him. Once in custody, police noticed Lepe wasn't breathing and rushed him to Mercy Hospital, where he died.

An autopsy was scheduled for Monday, and police are holding an administrative investigation into the incident.

It's unknown if Lepe had been using drugs before being taken into custody.
