McCarthy named chief deputy whip of U.S. House

Rep. Kevin McCarthy, R-Bakersfield

Congressman Kevin McCarthy, who represents most of Kern County, has been named chief deputy whip of the U.S. House of Representatives.

The chief deputy whip is the highest appointed position among Republicans in the House, and McCarthy will be the third-highest ranking House Republican after Minority Leader John Boehner of Ohio and Whip Eric Cantor of Virginia.

The whip system performs two primary functions, according to the House Committee on Rules: mobilizing party members for key votes and disseminating information from party leaders to party members.
