Two of the people suffered wounds that weren't considered life-threatening. A third person, a male, was in critical condition, said Sgt. Damon Youngblood of the city police department.
When police arrived, they located two of the three victims at the park who were then taken by ambulance to local hospitals. A short time later, police learned that a third person was being treated for gunshot wounds at another hospital. It's not known if the third person drove or was driven to the hospital.
Some people reported hearing several gunshots.
"Preliminarily, it sounds as though there may have been an exchange of gunfire, but that investigation is ongoing," said Youngblood.
Area residents blame what they say is increasing drug and gang activity at the park, which is directly across the street from West High School.
"I have three young children that live with me, and I don't think I'm going to allow them to go to the park again," said area resident Howard Farley.
