Human remains from storage shed those of boy, girl

Body parts found Aug. 19 in a storage shed in east Bakersfield were those of a boy and girl between ages 11 and 13, the Kern County Coroner's Office announced Wednesday.

Both appear to be either Caucasian or Hispanic, and officials will perform dental examinations to better identify the remains.

Officials also said the remains don't show obvious signs of trauma, and determining cause of death is unlikely because investigators have very little evidence to work with.

Robert Yohe, a California State University, Bakersfield, anthropologist, began work Tuesday to identify the body parts, which may have been in storage for years, according to investigators.

A Bakersfield family, whose name has not been disclosed by the sheriff's office, found a decomposed human hand in belongings they retrieved from Derrel's Mini Storage at 101 Mt. Vernon Ave.

Investigators then found more human remains inside the storage unit, which was rented by the family but used by other people, according to investigators.
