Metal thieves steal urns, take cremated remains
By Associated Press
UNION CITY, Calif. (AP) - Union City police say mausoleum thieves on the hunt for metals stole bronze urns, including one holding cremated remains.
According to police, the thieves took seven 20 to 40 pound bronze urns from the mausoleum at the Chapel of the Chimes Cemetery on Sunday. The stolen urns were not etched with the names of the dead, though one did contain ashes. Police have been in contact with local recyclers, who say they will not accept urns as scrap metal. Still, police are concerned the thieves will cut the urns up, making them unrecognizable. High metal prices have led to a rash of metal thefts across the country, including manhole covers, copper wiring and fire hydrants. |
