McFarland residents not happy about proposed sewer and garbage rate hike
People living in McFarland are not too happy about a proposal that would increase their sewer and garbage rates.
The city says its sewage treatment facility is simply too old and it needs improvements now before it gets any worse. City Manager Gerald Ford says operating expenses are exceeding revenues. The problem, McFarland is a small farmworkers town and many are on a fixed income and cannot afford the fee hike. Sewer fees would go from $17.10 a month to $31.87 per month. And garbage fees raised from $18.33 a month to $27.81. This evening the city council will hold a public hearing to give the public a chance to speak out on the proposed increase. They meet this evening at 6:30 at McFarland High School's Multi-Purpose room, 259 West Sherwood Avenue. |
