Childspree shopping trip
By Bernadette Flores, Reporting
Hundreds of local kids got a chance to shop 'till they drop' early Saturday morning, getting an early jump on the school year. 29 Eyewitness News Reporter Bernadette Flores is live in the newsroom with the story.
The national event helps abused and neglected children get ready for back to school. Several local non-profits chose the kids. Organizers say it was a chance to get them on a level playing field, but for the kids, it was a free shopping spree. About 100 kids ranging in age from kindergarten to eighth grade had the Mervyn's on California all to themselves. Armed with a volunteer helper and a list they did their best to get some back to school essentials. 9-year old Aidan was set on getting something fun as well. So after a few last minute changes at the register, it was time to use her 100 gift certificate, while others were still looking for that one specific item. All of the money came in part from Mervyn's and other local nonprofits such as CASA. Kids also got a backpack and some breakfast before it was time to head out, hopefully a little more prepared for the new school year. Childspree was going on at every Mervyn's store in the United States this morning. The program has helped almost 200-thousand kids get ready for back to school. |
