Gas line rupture shuts down Frazier Park
By Amity Addrisi, Reporting
A broken gas line shuts down the small town of Frazier Park for several hours Monday afternoon as fire crews and the Gas Company struggle to fix the ruptured pipe.
The incident happened in the center of town on Mount Pinos Way and Monterrey Trail, a construction crew digging in the area uncovered a large steel pipe, when they moved their equipment to avoid the pipe, they ended up hitting another pipe severing a smaller pipe connected to the gas main. 10 homes and several businesses in the area were evacuated for more than six hours. The area was evacuated to a 300 foot radius from one to seven Monday evening, shortly after that the area was reopened. The good news, there are no lasting effects of the leak and all utilities were quickly restored. People who live in town told Eyewitness News their nerves were on end, worried about the worst. Sharon Witt told us the rupture happened right in front of her home. Witt lives in the center of Downtown Frazier Park, and says she returned from Bakersfield Monday afternoon to several fire trucks and the intense smell of gas. Witt says there's been a lot of construction in the area because the Town is landscaping and putting in sidewalks. She believes while crews were working on moving a fire hydrant, they accidentally hit the line. The broken line also leaked fear into residents about fire season. Miranda Adcock tells Eyewitness News that with the heat and the winds they've had, her biggest concern was the town turning into a ball of flames. Beyond fears of fire, Adcock says it was also a major inconvenience of the main part of town being shut down. |
