Suspected drunk driver almost hits sheriff's deputy

WASCO, Calif. (KBAK/KBFX) — A Kern County Sheriff’s deputy was almost hit by a suspected drunk driver Saturday night.

The deputy was conducting a routine traffic stop in the 700 block of F Street in Wasco. While the deputy was approaching the vehicle, he looked back and saw a blue Hyundai sedan driving toward his patrol car. The Hyundai hit the left bumper and side panel of the patrol car and continued driving away. The deputy had to jump towards the stopped vehicle to evade the erratic driver, who almost hit him.

The deputy sprinted to his patrol car to stop the driver of the Hyundai. The driver was spotted driving northbound on F Street, at which time the deputy activated his siren and lights, which caused the driver to stop at the 400 block of F Street.

When the deputy approached the driver he could smell alcohol in his breath. The driver was identified as Gustavo Zamora Garcia, 59.

California Highway Patrol arrived to investigate the traffic accident and suspected drunk driving.

Garcia was booked into the Kern County Sheriff’s Office Central Receiving Facility for charges of hit and run resulting in property damage, and driving under the influence.
