Teen chases down alleged purse snatcher

BAKERSFIELD, Calif. (KBAK/KBFX) — An alleged purse snatcher was arrested Wednesday evening after his teen victim chased him down to recover her purse.

The 18-year-old woman's purse was grabbed outside a restaurant near Interstate 5 and Laval Road, the Kern County Sheriff's Office said Thursday. The woman chased the alleged thief to a pickup. The woman partially jumped into the truck through the passenger window to recover her purse, and the alleged thief pulled her info the truck and drove away, the sheriff's office said.

They drove to a nearby gas station before the suspect stopped. The victim, from Visalia, got out of the truck and ran for help, purse in hand, the sheriff's office said.

The woman reported the incident to a firefighter, who called the sheriff's office.

Deputies found the pickup abandoned nearby. It was discovered to have been stolen from the Stockton area.

The suspect, later identified as 22-year-old Joshua Gallegos, of Stockton, was found on foot and apprehended after a brief chase, the sheriff's office said. Gallegos was booked into jail on suspicion of kidnapping, possession of a stolen vehicle, grand theft and resisting arrest.
