BAKERSFIELD, Calif. (KBAK/KBFX) — Many businesses are struggling to stay afloat in this economy, but one Bakersfield business said it's the economy that has its customers rushing in.

"A lot of people are worried about people breaking in and stealing stuff. They are worried about home invasions," Second Amendment Sports assistant manager Jennifer McKenna said.

Because of that idea, safe and gun sales are up. Several people are buying guns for the first time.

"(My) neighbor had his house broken into and a neighbor down the street had their cars broken into in the front driveway," first-time gun buyer Jeff Uecker said.

He said he won't be taking any chances when it comes to his family and their safety.

"Just today we bought a home defense shot gun. We are looking at a pistol and also a safe. We are definitely serious," Uecker said.

He never thought he would have to purchase a gun or a safe to protect himself, but he said it is just the reality of the world today.

"It's a little bit scary. Crime is definitely on the rise so you need to protect yourself," Uecker said.

McKenna said the increase in gun sales has been happening for a few years. But they noticed a significant increase this year.
