Ex-councilmember takes plea in teen sex case
Former Tehachapi City Council member Daniel Shane Reed, 41, is seen with his attorney July 11, 2011, during his arraignment in Kern County Superior Court on allegations of molesting two teen boys.

BAKERSFIELD, Calif. — A former Tehachapi City Council member has taken a plea deal in a case of teen sex.

Attorney Alan Klein said Thursday that Daniel Shane Reed pleaded no contest to one misdemeanor count of annoying or molesting a child and one felony count of contact with a minor with intent to commit a sexual offense.

Reed faces a possible prison term of two years and registration as a sex offender. His sentencing will be Jan. 4, the attorney said.

The 41-year-old man was accused of engaging in sexual acts with two teen boys. He was charged in July with three counts of oral copulation with a person under 18, two counts of sodomy with a person under 18 and two counts of annoying/molesting children.

Reed resigned from the City Council in July and from his job as a Kern County firefighter this week.

The victim who brought this case to light told the detective that he engaged in both anal and oral sex with Reed, according to court documents. The boy said he met Reed through a friend in February, when the three of them went to Pismo Beach. The boy was 16 at that time. The sexual relationship, both oral and anal, started that weekend, the boy told police.

Follow-up sexual encounters came after Reed took the boy shopping and out to eat, and the two exchanged text messages and had rendezvous at motels, the detective alleged in court documents.

Reed was sworn into City Council office in December 2008, and his term was set to end in November 2012.
