Sheriff's officials say they were investigating calls of a man who was breaking into vehicles at nearby Sears Park. Deputies began patrolling the area and found a man who fit the suspect's description.

The suspect was identified as Adam Hortter.

Deputy Mike Blue, a six-year veteran, attempted to make contact with and detain Hortter, who then attempted to walk away. Blue ordered him to stop and attempted to detain him, but Hortter resisted, said investigators.

A fight broke out, and during the struggle the deputy was knocked to the ground and was on his back as he fought with Hortter who was on top of him.

A second deputy, three-year veteran Daniel Willis, arrived and struck Hortter with a Taser, but it had no effect.

Hortter had gotten ahold of Blue's baton and then raised the baton toward the deputy. Blue then fired several rounds from his gun, striking Hortter.

Horttor was taken to Memorial Hospital, where he was pronounced dead a short time later.

Blue was placed on routine paid administrative leave pending a review of the shooting.
