WASCO, Calif. (KBAK/KBFX) — A 12-year-old Wasco girl was killed Friday evening when the car in which she was riding was hit by a big rig.

The crash happened at the intersection of Palm and McCombs avenues. It involved a big rig hauling a trailer and a passenger vehicle carrying four people.

"The truck driver was traveling west on McCombs Avenue, approximately 55, 56 miles per hour. He simply did not see the stop sign (and) ran the stop sign," said CHP officer Ryan Duran.

The car's driver, 23-year-old Carlos Ortiz, of Wasco, suffered major injuries. The girl who was killed was identified by coroner's investigators as Dulce Flor Ortiz. Two other passengers suffered moderate injuries.The big-rig driver, identified as a 56-year-old Howard Young, of Lemoore, suffered moderate injuries.

The intersection was closed well past midnight, until the big rig and its trailer could be pulled upright and towed away.
