BAKERSFIELD, Calif. — The Bakersfield Police Department received a big honor over the weekend from the California chapter of Mothers Against Drunk Drivers.

MADD named it the California Law Enforcement Agency of the Year, saying that it has done "more overall to stop drunk driving, support the victims of this violent crime, and prevent underage drinking," according to a news release from Bakersfield police.

The award was presented Saturday at the Hyatt Regency in Sacramento.

Bakersfield Officer Christopher Bagby was also honored for his individual achievement in traffic enforcement and DUI detection. Bagby participated in the investigations of 18 fatal crashes and at least as many major injury crashes over the past three years, according to police. Bagby was commended for the manner in which he conducted these investigations and for his compassion for the victims.
