BAKERSFIELD, Calif. — Westbound Highway 58 in the middle of Bakersfield was closed for most of Monday morning after a fiery big rig crash.
Traffic was closed at the Oak Street overpass until the California Highway Patrol opened the No. 2 lane around 10:45 a.m. All lanes reopened before noon.
Wible Road, which is Oak Street to the north of Hwy. 58, was also closed between Stockdale Highway and Belle Terrace, because the rear axle and other truck parts fell onto Wible. It has since reopened, too.
Raymond E. Baker, 65, of Ohio, reportedly told the CHP that he fell asleep around 3:45 a.m., prompting him to hit the guardrail and then hit the bridge barrier before the cab of the big rig caught fire.
Fire officials said when they arrived, the driver was out of the cab, and it was completely engulfed in flames. Firefighters were able to contain the fire to the cab of the big rig.
