BAKERSFIELD, Calif. -- Heather Edward's Christmas was one of the happiest days she spent with her family in years. But just 48 hours later, Edwards and her family are grieving the loss of her mother and sister.

Monday night, Heather's mother, 55-year-old Cynthia Paregien, and her 28-year-old sister, Tiffany, were killed when they were hit by a big rig hauling two trailers of carrots at Panama Road and Union Avenue.

"They were just going to buy cigarettes," Edwards said.

Cynthia Paregien died at the scene. Tiffany died later at Kern Medical Center. She left behind two children.

"Sean and Lacey, this poor baby, will never know her mom because of some idiot," Edwards said.

The California Highway Patrol confirmed that investigators inspected and released a truck Tuesday morning. The ongoing investigation is looking at all companies that run trucks in the area.
