LAMONT, Calif. -- A man was impaled by a pipe Wednesday morning while working on Grimmway Farms property off Malaga Road near Lamont.

The 53-year-old man, who hasn't been identified, was driving a forklift when he crashed into a metal pipe gate, impelling his lower body, according to the Kern County Fire Department.

Firefighters had to cut the man free from the pipe to get him into the air ambulance. Grimmway also had an emergency response team on scene.

The man was taken to the Kern Medical Center trauma unit with what the fire department called "serious" injuries.

"The details and cause of the accident are currently being investigated," Grimmway said in a prepared statement. "At this point, all of our efforts are being directed to assisting the injured employee and his family. Our thoughts and prayers go out to him and his family for a successful recovery."
